About Eco Step

Small Steps. A Greener Tomorrow.

I am Chu Nam Khanh, a high school student and the founder of Eco Step. I love sports and wear sneakers every day. That habit made me curious about how a shoe is made and which materials go into it.

As I looked deeper, I saw that a shoe is made of many parts and materials. Some common synthetic materials can take a very long time to break down after the product is discarded. That raised a question: can we find other materials to make shoe components in a more environmentally responsible way?

That is where Eco Step began.

What is Eco Step?

Eco Step is a project I am building to research and develop shoe products and components from more responsible material sources. Instead of starting with a complete pair, I focus on each part - upper, tongue, insole, midsole, outsole, and shoelaces - to learn how recycled or more earth-friendly materials can be applied.

I am especially interested in reusing post-consumer materials, including recycled plastic, and exploring whether they can be processed into products with new useful value.

From an idea to a project

As a high school student, I did not start Eco Step with full knowledge of materials or shoe manufacturing. I started by learning, asking questions, and experimenting. Along the way I have been learning about sustainable materials, product design, technology, and entrepreneurship.

For me, Eco Step is not only a business project. It is also a way to learn by doing - from researching a problem and developing a product idea to thinking about how to bring it to users.

Where I want Eco Step to go

I do not think a small project can solve every environmental issue in footwear. What I want is to start with small changes and look for better ways to use materials in products.

I want Eco Step to grow step by step into a project on sustainable footwear materials and shoe components - a place to keep researching, testing, and connecting with people skilled in materials, design, and production.

To me, "Step" in Eco Step is not only a footstep in a shoe - it is also the first step on a journey to find a different way of making.

I started Eco Step not because I already had the answers, but because I wanted to look for them. I believe a big change can begin with a very small step.
